About me
PROFESSIONAL ARTIST/PAINTER.
21 YEARS EXPERIENCE WITH THE MEDIUM OF THE OILS.
SELF TAUGHT. MY QUALIFICATION IS IN MY WORK.
A Little bit about the painter.
Born in Portsmouth 1st January 1968. My observations during school years were mainly toward observing the shapes and forms of things around me as well as people rather than the usual mainstream. Later; after leaving school, a deeper interest in the natural world became apparent and more important than finding a career. But That is not to say that I did not learn anything of the mainstream: in my Art I was self taught. Believing in myself that as far as the subject of Art is concerned nature would be my teacher. For these reasons I had no wish to go to Art college for the purpose of Art. For instance, if one thinks of ‘line’ and ‘curve’, then one simply need observe where in nature those two factors exist. The same learning technique I think is true of hue and tone, shape and form and light and shade, so too with other factors.
The sketches and doodles that I did do were few and far between in the younger years with most of them done in idle moments and then stuck in an obscure draw or file. A discovery of the medium of the oils became apparent to me at about the age of 19 years. This medium I found to be more 'workable' in it's consistency than any other i.e., if I wished I could have the medium work as a mere 'stodge' and create 'texture' or as a thin translucent film of paint creating a translucent glaze. The permanency of the pigments and their drying times were favorable to me because I do not like to 'rush' things so to speak. To me, Oil Painting is not to be considered a 'Quick' process. It's substance has to be studied along with the application and technique.
The Oil paintings one views are a culmination of 'patience' in developing 'ways' which work for me as an individual. That, with the study of the subject matter enough for an oil painting amounts to much time.
I think that now; twenty years later, it is for me to strive to master or refine the techniques already learnt, experiment and diversify my ideas, refine my observation of things e.t.c. All this I should imagine amounts to a lifetimes study in the medium no doubt. But at this stage I am happy with the techniques already acquired even if other people aren't.
My philosophy is deep on matters of Art. Generally I realized that 'perfection' must be the unattainable factor, even I expect in most things. And that art encompasses ALL things. I realised too that the challenge in striving for the above can be an adventure in itself. That it is always there to be met if only patience enough to 'try' is developed, by patience I mean a lifetime's study.
I think to paint for the remainder of my life no matter what; is a goal for me, because there is so much more to learn. To the eye there are a million subjects just in one garden. Someone else in the field always has a useful 'tip' to offer etcetera. The world of Art is huge.
I am a contemporary painter studying traditional methods and traditional 'things' in our Landscapes, this amongst a vast array of 'other' subject matter can lead the mind to all sorts of expressive imagery.
Being frank to the reader; it is only at my pace and my discretion do I study the arts. This type of study can not be hastened or fast-tracked. When I focus my mind on an object or thing, it is not merely a passing glance.
Socially; I consider myself to be well mannered and polite when in the company of family and friends, and strangers of course, if not a little blunt at times in my defence. I can get a little frustrated when people do not listen or do not believe a word said; but even though that clouds the mind like a cobweb: such frustrations pass quickly. I am a the father of four children in our democratically controlled nuclear family (stepfather to three from since they were VERY young, and biological father to one other). All of which are growing up to be civilized, healthy, hard working and Law abiding citizens of this state we live in; of this I am proud. Indeed I am a very proud individual at the best of times.
I do not like obnoxious individuals, or lies from peoples tongues. Or ignorant people that claim to know the facts when they do not. I do not get on well with these types. I also tend to stay clear from people who speculate too much (although I am guilty of it myself at times; I for one have noticed my boundary with this factor). I live to keep my people safe, happy, nurtured and reasonably comfortable. Prosperity on the other hand is harder to attain.
My philosophy is very deep as too is the nature of me. My art;is the greatest teacher of 'things'; both objectivly, subjectively and socially. My perception is acute at times. I believe in causality but not necessarily of religion or theology; I prefer facts rather than fiction although my mind can percieve both. I introspect to the point of knowing that I am not perfect....but then again nor is anybody!
Criminal convictions. None. Kept away from trouble. Been too busy in my life being curious about other things. Filling my mind up with philosophy and art. In fact epestemelogical enquiry proved to be more ineresting than most things. The difference between falsehood and truth and the various schools of thought on the matter certainly gives insight into many character types. Me, part dualist, part rationalist and part empiricist...phenomenolgy is another good perspective!! But there are other schools of thought; Cogito ergo Sum', I think therefore I am; by Descartes, was a rationalist example. But, for me as an individual Ethics and the Moral science was and is held as important, understanding the principles of basic ethics endows a greater understanding of people. I believe ethics should be introduced into schools on the carriculum. A subject all of it's own.
